Principal David Ogega’s retirement
On June 30, 2026, the Nyabisase School held a ceremony honoring Chief Principal David Ogega for his four decades of service as a TSC certified teacher and administrator.
On this day, the man closely associated with the school’s excellence was stepping away in a celebratory mood.
Within days of Mr. Ogega’s exit, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) announced his replacement; a senior principal of nearby Mochorwa Secondary School.
Rather than a smooth handover, the announcement triggered fierce resistance from students, who rejected the posting.
The situation escalated quickly, students clashed with teachers in running battles, hurling stones at one another as police were deployed to restore calm.
The unrest culminated in the torching of one of the school’s dormitories, after which students fled the scene. The school was eventually closed indefinitely pending further investigation.
The Nyabisase case follows a string of similar unrests through the country including a serious fire at Utumishi Girls Academy that claimed the lives of 16 students.
Official among them Kisii County Director of Education Philip Chirchir have since been under pressure to address what has become a recurring pattern of school closures tied to leadership changes and student grievances.
