Alumna and history of State House Girls
Located in Westlands Sub-County, Nairobi County, State House Girls’ High School premises were formerly occupied by a European hospital.
Even so, the current main administration block was part of that original hospital building, while the teachers’ houses adjacent to the State House main gate were formerly the Sisters’ Mess.
In January 1954, the hospital relocated to become what is now the Nairobi Hospital, clearing the way for the establishment of a school known as the New Girls’ Secondary School.
A European dispensary briefly shared the site with the new institution before the school assumed full occupancy.
By the end of 1955, the school was divided into two institutions: the New Girls’ Secondary School (Nairobi) and Highland School (Eldoret), which is today known as Moi Girls’ High School.
The entire student body, headmistress, and equipment at the time moved to Eldoret.
From 1956 onwards, a new student body of both boys and girls was admitted, and the school was renamed Delamere High School — named after the prominent colonial settler, Lord Delamere. The school catered to European boys and girls who did not secure admission at Prince of Wales, Duke of York, now called Kenya High School.
In 1958, the boys transferred to what is now Upper Hill High School, then called Delamere Boys’ School, leaving the institution as a girls-only school. It retained the name Delamere Girls’ School for about a decade.
In 1961, the school’s administration came under a Board of Governors.
Then in 1967, the institution was renamed State House Road Girls’ High School, before finally adopting its current name, State House Girls’ High School, dropping the word “Road” from its title.
Today, State House Girls is classified as an Extra County School and under the new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework. It is a Cluster 1 public boarding school for girls.
